Introducing Driver Performance Rating: A New Way to Measure Driver Performance

At Refined Motorsport, we're looking for new ways to bring more depth to sim racing, help drivers understand their performance, and give our community more reasons to keep coming back.

Today, we're introducing Driver Performance Rating (DPR). A new feature designed to provide a single, easy-to-understand rating that reflects a driver's performance across their races.

But DPR is about more than just finishing positions. It's designed to look at several aspects of a driver's performance, from results and qualifying pace to racecraft, consistency, and reliability across leagues and races.

What is Driver Performance Rating?

Driver Performance Rating is a score out of 100 that gives drivers another way to understand how they're performing across their races.

Race results will always tell an important part of the story, but they don't tell the whole story. Two drivers might finish in similar positions while having very different races. One might have fought through the field, another might have led laps at the front, while someone else might have delivered a clean, consistent drive from start to finish.

DPR brings several performance indicators together into one rating, helping build a broader picture of each driver's performance over time.

It's another way to explore the numbers behind the racing, compare performances, and see where there's room to improve.

What contributes to your rating?

DPR considers five key areas of performance:

Race results

Finishing position is a major part of your rating. Strong finishes are rewarded, with additional recognition for podium performances. Your result is considered in the context of the classified field rather than simply being treated as a standalone position.

Qualifying and position changes

Where you start matters, but so does what you do once the lights go out. This part considers your starting position alongside the places you gain or lose during the race, recognising drivers who make progress through the field.

Race dominance

Leading laps is another indicator of performance. This helps recognise drivers who spend time at the front and demonstrate the pace to lead a race, rather than relying on finishing position alone.

Clean driving

Racecraft matters. Incident data helps distinguish cleaner performances from races where incidents are more frequent. Maintaining control, avoiding unnecessary contact, and keeping your driving consistent can all contribute to this aspect of your rating.

Reliability and consistency

Completing races and maximising the laps you run are also important. Finishing position is only one part of performance, and staying in the race allows you to demonstrate your ability over the full distance. DNF's & DSQ from events impacts your DPR score heavily.

Together, these five areas help DPR build a more rounded picture of a driver's performance.

How can you improve your DPR?

There isn't a single shortcut to a stronger rating. The best approach is to focus on putting together complete, competitive performances.

  • Fight for strong finishes. Consistently finishing towards the front of the field will help your results profile.

  • Make your qualifying count. A strong starting position can make a difference, but effective racecraft and gaining positions on track matter too.

  • Show front-running pace. Leading laps demonstrates that you can compete at the sharp end of a race.

  • Keep your driving clean. Avoid unnecessary incidents and focus on controlled, consistent racing.

  • Finish what you start. Completing laps and bringing the car home reliably are important parts of your overall performance.

Above all, focus on improving as a driver rather than chasing a number. DPR is intended to reflect your performances over time, not replace the racing itself.

Your driver profile is becoming more detailed

DPR is part of a wider effort to give every driver more insight into their racing history and performance.

We've also expanded the aggregated statistics available on driver profiles, making it easier to explore career results and identify patterns across your races.

We're also working on a new set of driver performance graphs that will provide more detailed insights into how you perform at individual circuits, in different cars, and across different classes.

The goal is to make your driver profile more than a record of past results. We want it to become a place where you can explore your strengths, understand your performances, and see how your racing develops over time.

A rating that will grow with the community

It's important to be clear about where DPR stands today: this is the beginning, not the finished product.

The rating is still in its early stages, and we're continuing to fine-tune it as more race results become available. As drivers compete in more events across Refined Motorsport leagues, the growing pool of data will help build a more complete picture of performance.

Drivers with fewer recorded races may see their ratings change more as new results come in. As more data becomes available, ratings should become more representative of a driver's performances over time.

The same principle applies to the new profile statistics and performance graphs. Their usefulness will continue to grow as our leagues generate more results across different circuits, cars, and classes.

We're launching these features now because we believe they add value to the platform today, while giving us a foundation to build on for the future.

What's next?

Driver Performance Rating is another step towards making Refined Motorsport a richer platform for the sim racing community, one where the racing doesn't end when the chequered flag falls.

With more detailed driver statistics, DPR, and performance insights in development, we're continuing to build ways for drivers and fans alike to explore the competition beyond the race itself.

As always, these features will evolve alongside the community. The more we race, the more data we collect, and the more opportunities we'll have to make these insights useful.

Your results tell the story of each race. DPR is another way to explore the story behind your performance.
